News and Policy Updates
Online 2018 membership registration is now available. Here's the online registration form. A membership purchased now will be valid until 31 December 2018.
The membership fee for 2018 is $40. If you have a 2017 membership (acquired between 1 October 2016 and 30 September 2017), to encourage you to renew your membership early, your membership fee will be reduced by $5 if you renew before January 31.
This year's Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be on Thursday, 9 November 2017, at the Sandy Hill Community Centre, from 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM. At our AGM, we'll review the past year and look toward the future. We hope that you'll join us!
It is generally expected that a trip leader will make best efforts to have sufficient money to cover all costs without requiring an advance from the OOC. Trip deposits collected from participants should be of a sufficient amount and collected early enough such that early payments that must be made for accommodation and other expenses can be made from the partcipants' deposits.
At the executive meeting of 25 July 2017, it was decided to remove the constraint limiting social functions to be advertised only to OOC members. The following reasons were provided:
Our Social Coordinator, Anna Gopenko, volunteered to add the role of Cycling Coordinator to her portfolio. By email vote, the executive confirmed Anna in this position as of 10 April 2017. If you're interested in leading a bicycle outing, please contact Anna (cycle at ottawaoutdoorclub.ca).
With the advent of online membership registration, credit cards (via PayPal) are now accepted for membership payment.
(Please note that this overturns an executive resolution of June 2009 saying that membership fees cannot be paid by credit card.)
At the Club's 2010 AGM on 9 November 2010, the membership ratified its new name: Ottawa Outdoor Club (OOC).
The OOC was formerly know as the Ottawa Hostel Outdoor Club (OHOC), but, because the Club is no longer based at the Ottawa Hostel and now has no association with the Hostel, "Hostel" was removed from the name.
Some previous news and policy updates referred to "OHOC" or the "Ottawa Hostel Outdoor Club". These have been left unchanged, except for one related to writing a cheque, to ensure that people write cheques to the correct entity.
The question has been occasionally raised as to whether it would be possible to pay the Club membership fee by credit card. The OHOC executive decided against having payment of membership fees by credit card at its June 2009 board meeting because
At the 2006 AGM, the question was raised as to whether OHOC could have partial-year memberships. The OHOC executive decided against having partial-year memberships at its June 2009 board meeting because it would
OHOC appreciates its volunteers. Thanks to leaders like you, our Club thrives. Hopefully you find leading to be an enjoyable experience. Please also remember that participants are looking forward to the outing and many will arrive, wanting to socialize and looking for some kind of outing, regardless of poor weather.
With safety and insurance in mind, the following guidelines are mandatory:
- Non-members are welcome but must ALWAYS sign up at the trip starting location and not at the destination parking lot.
- So that there is less chance that members of our group will become disoriented and/or lost, the outing leader should wear an armband or a distinctive hat or, better yet, wear clothing with reflective surfaces or tape.
- Use of the Sign-up sheets is mandatory.
OHOC has a new time for beginning our outings!! Starting in April, all activities will have a REGISTER-BY time of 9:45 a.m. In other words, be there and sign up BEFORE 9:45 a.m.
